Avian Psittacosis in Louisiana Pet Birds

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has received reports of cases of avian psittacosis in Louisiana pet birds. There were possible human cases, but these cases have not been confirmed. Many of the avian cases were associated with breeders and pet stores in northwest Louisiana. It also appears that birds in Arkansas are implicated. Though DSHS has no specific reports of ill birds in East Texas, the possibility certainly exits.

This disease is reportable at 903 533-5260.
